Washington and London Reiterate Messages as Brussels Searches for One

SUMMARY

Congress is home for the runup to Election Day. Members seeking re-election and many others have an interest in US employment reports at week’s end. Until then, Fed speakers, UK’s dynamic duo, EU finance ministers, and plenty of G7 economic activity measures fill the void. The politics of UK fiscal policy will be on display as the Conservative Party’s autumn conference begins tomorrow. EU finance ministers also get back to work in Luxembourg tomorrow morning on macroeconomic policy, heavily influenced by energy market realities, making consensus difficult to achieve.

Plenty has been written about Putin’s latest signs of insecurity. David Ignatius recommends in a recent Washington Post opinion piece allowing more time for further flailing. Donald Trump’s swipe at Mitch McConnell and his wife along with differences over old and new disaster aid signal that the next five weeks will be loud and pointed as US voters prepare for November 8 midterms.
