22V’s Michael Hirson hosted a special webinar on China’s tech revolutions with Rui Ma, a veteran tech investor and the founder of Tech Buzz China. Rui cut through the hype in observing the state of play in AI, electric vehicles, humanoid robotics, and several other key sectors.

You can find a replay of the webinar HERE. Some highlights are below.

Agentic AI

  • The hype over OpenClaw adoption in China exaggerates actual usage, but agentic AI is still very exciting. China has a poor history when it comes to monetizing software, but agentic AI turns that on its head by allowing users to make their own software. Alibaba, Tencent, and ByteDance are hyper-focused on using their massive platforms to distribute agents throughout their entire ecosystems. The new metric that matters is token usage.
  • A useful analogy for global AI diffusion is Apple iOS (US frontier models) vs. Android (Chinese models). US frontier models can command a premium from top-end users. Chinese models will rely on a larger installed base and do not necessarily enjoy the same margins. There is growing pressure to monetize, but Chinese firms will still feature open-weight models to attract users outside of China and then try to upsell them. On the hardware side, China may still lack advanced chips used for training AI models, but domestic solutions for inference are perfectly fine.

Electric Vehicles, Humanoid Robotics, and “China Speed”

  • The economics of the EV industry will remain tough until there is more consolidation in the sector. In the meantime, many of the firms are pushing into humanoid robotics as the new growth story. This sector is overhyped, and the use cases are still not clear, even if the progress is fast. Robotics firms have mastered the “brainstem” of the robot (complex movements), but not yet how to make them truly intelligent.
  • The speed with China’s manufacturing sector advances is its greatest advantage. This speed is due to the density of manufacturing hubs, extensive transport infrastructure, supportive government policies, and a flexible and talented labor pool.

The Next Wave of Clean Tech

  • Western investors may be surprised by the extent to which China has a strategy and defined timeline for deploying green hydrogen (using solar energy to produce hydrogen from water). The cost of renewable energy needs to drop further to make this practical, but China is getting there. The implications are huge, as green hydrogen products could replace lower-energy-density fuels (diesel, natural gas, fuel oils, etc.).
