I like the setup ahead of CPI, and the official start of bank earnings tomorrow, to tactically add bank upside exposure via call options in the main regional bank ETF (KRE). After rallying by as much as 22% from the November lows to the post-election highs, KRE made a full round-trip back to those November lows (and has now started to move back higher). Clearly the move higher in rates and hawkish comments from Jay Powell at the last FOMC meeting weighed on sentiment for the group, which contributed to much of the weakness we have seen since the end of November. With the weaker, more Dovish, PPI data today and CPI on deck for tomorrow perhaps good earnings/commentary from the banks reporting this week could be the catalyst to move the group back meaningfully higher?  The positive action from the sector today, even with bonds not rallying on the weaker PPI data, should also be viewed as a possible inflection point for the group.

Trade:

Buy KRE Jan 17th $61 calls for .65 (KRE $60.10 ref)

Trade Details:

  • Buying the weekly KRE calls ahead of CPI report tomorrow morning and start of bank earnings season
  • Banks, and specifically the regionals, have been under considerable pressure as yields have continued to rise. Any relief we see from yields could go a long way towards seeing the sector rebound
  • Short-term tactical trade with both CPI and earnings being a possible catalyst
  • Prefer KRE to XLF given higher beta, more diversification and no Insurance company exposure

After rallying by ~ 22% from the November lows to the post-election highs, KRE has pulled back to support as yields have climbed higher
