Two segments of National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan’s news conference an hour ago amplify a sense of pending Russian military action against Ukraine.
-
“What we can say is that there is a credible prospect that a Russian military action would take place even before the end of the Olympics.”
-
A Russian attack would likely begin with aerial bombing and missile attacks that would cause widespread civilian casualties, Sullivan said, encouraging Americans in Ukraine to leave as soon as feasible.
Our geopolitical webinar guest yesterday, Chris Skaluba of the Atlantic Council, had no time at 3p EST for a phone call. He offered the following points in a text:
-
While he remains “not totally convinced” military action is imminent, Chris acknowledges conversations within US Government and NATO circles indicate events are trending in that direction.
-
He added that a conversation with an experienced war correspondent reaffirms what Chris is hearing.
We will monitor developments and pass on whatever we learn. Our speculation is of no value to clients, so we won’t. We are listening to BBC World News, American Forces Network Radio (Stuttgart) streams, and following Nick Schifrin’s twitter feed (PBS Newshour).
